Sunday, Feb 20 - Founder's Day Worship Service - 11:00 am

Morehouse College realizes that the pandemic has made it very difficult to celebrate our Founder's Day experience in person for more than two years.

In 2022, we will return in a hybrid celebration experience so that you can safely join us in Atlanta for a limited capacity, in-person event, or experience the Gala virtually via a special premiere link.

Today, we are pleased to announce our 2022 Bennie and Candle honorees and share our link to purchase your General or VIP Gala Tickets or Tables. To provide the safest gathering during Founder's Week, we have reduced our total number of Tables to 125 with a maximum of 8 seats per table based on the Hyatt COVID Guidelines internationally.

The "A Candle in the Dark" Gala is named from Morehouse College's official history book written by Edward A. Jones '26.

Since its founding in 1989, the "A Candle in the Dark" Gala has become one of the nation's premier events to celebrate African American achievement and raise much-needed scholarship funds for deserving students. This exceptional evening of elegance and accomplishment has honored more than 221 luminaries over the past 34 years.

Last year we honored Senator Raphael Warnock '91, noted physician Rob Gore '98, civil rights attorney Gordon Joyner '72, Merck CEO Ken Frazier, Ford Foundation CEO Darren Walker, and Entertainment Mogul, Byron Allen, as our first honorees to receive their awards virtually.

Former honorees include philanthropists Oprah Winfrey (Hon. '89) and Robert F. Smith (Hon. '19), Verdun Perry '94; Academy Award-winning filmmaker Spike Lee '79, actors Harry Belafonte, Sidney Poitier, Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, Samuel L. Jackson '72, Roscoe Lee Browne and Danny Glover; renowned historian and educator John Hope Franklin; legendary sports figures Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the Late Henry "Hank" Aaron (Hon. '09), Muhammad Ali and Arthur Ashe; civil rights leaders Andrew Young, John Lewis and H. Julian Bond '71; former U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher '63; noted scholar and professor Cornel West, King Chapel Dean Lawrence E. Carter and a host of other extraordinary achievers.

We look forward to reconnecting with the Morehouse philanthropic community for this exciting event on February 19, 2022, when Morehouse adds seven outstanding recipients to an influential and iconic list of Bennie and Candle honorees!

Morehouse College is committed to keeping our alumni, faculty, staff, students, and guests safe while celebrating with us at the 2022 “A Candle in the Dark” Gala and related events.

In the interest of public health and safety and based on the recommendation of the CDC (and other local and state health authorities), our Gala hotel partner, the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, our epidemiologist, and the College’s COVID-19 Taskforce, the College has made a number of adjustments to this year's event:

  • Guest tables will be separated 6 feet apart with no more than eight (8) seats per table.
  • Room capacity has been reduced to 50% capacity
  • All attendees MUST upload their proof of vaccination cards and submit the results of a NEGATIVE COVID test taken 72 hours prior to the Gala. If results cannot be confirmed and updated within this required 72-hour time frame, a rapid COVID-19 test must be taken ONSITE and negative results received before a wristband will be issued for entry to the Gala Awards Ceremony.
  • Guest wristbands are non-transferable and must be worn by authorized attendees.
  • Masks must be worn at all times, except when attendees are actively eating and drinking.
  •  result must be obtained before a wristband will be issued for entry to the Gala Awards Ceremony.
